Each week as I begin work on the Tattoo Tuesday post, I get to thinking about what tattoo I want next. It's been almost two and a half years since I last got one (which is something I'll cover in a few weeks time), and it keeps coming back to this crazy idea of getting a portrait of Phil Collins.
Yes, Phil Collins. Again, I'll explain why in a later post, as this post is all about featuring the work of a tattoo artist.
I chose this week's artist due to his unique style of tattooing portraits.
Dan Molloy is an Australian artist, tattooing out of WA Ink in Fremantle, Western Australia.
So, why is his work so different? The colour portraits could be described as cartoon realism.
The high concentration of ink with just the right amount of detailed line work brings each piece to life.
The defining features of the subject, whether it be person or animal (or Cabbage Patch Kid - see below), are prominent and instantly recognisable, but there's also this softness to the portraits. Dan's work shows great restraint whilst staying true to the subject matter.
But Dan doesn't just do portraits, as you can see on his Instagram page, there is a mix of styles and subject matter. His strong art and tattooing technique enable him to cross over into other styles, and continue to produce lasting, quality tattoos.
